Subject: I love firefox, but they removed a useful shortcut: clear form text with ctrl-u.

As of 1.0.5 they removed the file: platformHTMLBindings.xml
To get ctrl-u to clear input fileds (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/1.0.5.html)
 1. Add a line to your ~/.gtkrc-2.0
      gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs"
 2. Restart firefox

For those who did not know, in versions of firefox prior to 0.93, by
selecting a field (url locater field, search field, or form field) and
pressing ctrl-u, the text in the field is deleted.  This is handy, as
one often has something in the copy buffer already, and a <select
all><delete> would add extra steps. 

The mozilla team says to set this in gnome key bindings.
    It didn't work for me ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/index.phtml?title=Emacs_Keybindings_(Firefox) ).

To fix firefox-1.0 and newer (tested on SuSE, Debian, Gentoo in KDE):
 1. Add a line to /opt/firefox-1.0/res/builtin/platformHTMLBindings.xml
     (Gentoo path: /usr/lib/MozillaFirefox/res/builtin/platformHTMLBindings.xml )
     (SuSE path: /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/res/builtin/platformHTMLBindings.xml )
   In the section:
      <binding id="inputFields">
        <handlers>
        <!-- BEG JOHN -->
        <handler event="keypress" key="u" modifiers="control" command="cmd_deleteToBeginningOfLine"/>
        <!-- END JOHN -->
        </handlers>
      </binding>
   Restart firefox.
